A Dubliner's Guide to Dublin
Living Dublin is a site produced by Dublin people for anyone wanting to know more about Dublin. Whether you are visiting Dublin or Ireland in general, these are the entirely subjective views of Dubliners wishing to make your tourist experience more informed and, hopefully, more memorable. Welcome. So what's it all about then? Dublin. Dubh Linn. Baile Átha Cliath, the Town of the Ford of the Hurdles. Erstwhile Viking trading centre, once a capital city of the British Empire, in its time a melting pot of Celts, Normans, Jews, Huguenots, Scandinavians and any other race passing through, Dublin today is a cosmopolitan culture with an increasing migrant population from Eastern and Western Europe, Africa and Asia. To visit Dublin today is to see a city in growth and change. To compare it to Dublin of twenty or thirty years ago is like comparing Los Angeles to The Wild West. Change has brought both good and bad. A tourist in Dublin should take the normal precautions they would take in any large city. But Dubliners have not lost their affection for the important things in life - good food, good drink, good music, good company and, most importantly, good conversation. Come, visit and enjoy, or as one famous naturalised Dubliner would put it, Read on . . . . Live Music in DublinLive music has been breaking out all over Dublin this summer. The introduction of the smoking ban amongst other things has seen a windchange in people's drinking and pub-going habits, with the result that pubs are increasingly trying to provide an added-value experience to attract customers. A good thing surely. Will we see a return to the pub-rock heyday of the '79s and '80s? I hope so. My own local has been getting in on the act. More Words to Confound the TouristThanks to Lorraine, who writes from Amerikay to suggest some new additions to our Dictionary of Dublin Slang. She says when she uses them "people look at me like I have ten heads.". So now we have amn't, oul'fle, oul'one, puked me ring up and out of me tree as well. Visitors to Dublin #2Coming to visit Dublin? Wondering who has been a tourist before you? One leading physicist spent 17 years working here in Merrion Square. Merrion SquareI've finally added Merrion Square to the Dublin by Area guide. There's a full page about the history and architecture, what to do and what to see, as well as a list of hotels in the area. Dublin on the WebAlthough the pages of this site are purely personal reflections of Dublin, I use the web frequently to check my facts. In doing so, I've come across other sites providing useful information and pictures of Dublin. I've put a selection of these in my Other Sites about Dublin page. |
