A Dubliner's Guide to Dublin
Living Dublin is a site produced by Dublin people for anyone wanting to know more about Dublin. Whether you are visiting Dublin or Ireland in general, these are the entirely subjective views of Dubliners wishing to make your tourist experience more informed and, hopefully, more memorable. Welcome. So what's it all about then? Dublin. Dubh Linn. Baile Átha Cliath, the Town of the Ford of the Hurdles. Erstwhile Viking trading centre, once a capital city of the British Empire, in its time a melting pot of Celts, Normans, Jews, Huguenots, Scandinavians and any other race passing through, Dublin today is a cosmopolitan culture with an increasing migrant population from Eastern and Western Europe, Africa and Asia. To visit Dublin today is to see a city in growth and change. To compare it to Dublin of twenty or thirty years ago is like comparing Los Angeles to The Wild West. Change has brought both good and bad. A tourist in Dublin should take the normal precautions they would take in any large city. But Dubliners have not lost their affection for the important things in life - good food, good drink, good music, good company and, most importantly, good conversation. Come, visit and enjoy, or as one famous naturalised Dubliner would put it, Read on . . . . Accommodation in DublinThe Dublin Hotels section of this site is my own take on certain hotels in Dublin that attract my attention for one reason or another. It is not intended to be an online hotel booking service. For that I can do no better than to recommend you to Dublin City Centre Hotels, a site run by my long-time friend Philip Troy. Philip has been accommodating satisfied visitors to Dublin since the interwebby net thing was born, and if you want his advice on where to stay in Dublin you can even call him for nothing on 0800 912 0021 from the UK or 1800 869 4330 from the US. Tell him Living Dublin sent you. Live Music in DublinWith the recession looming and various new laws and policies seeming designed to hit the vintners where it hurts, more and more Dublin pubs have been turning to live music to attract the punters. A good thing surely. Will we see a return to the pub-rock heyday of the '79s and '80s? I hope so. Dublin Slang - Lesson 492More words added to the dictionary. So if you ever meet a sky pilot called Eamo who's as happy as Larry, then you'll know what he's talking about. Visitors to Dublin #2Coming to visit Dublin? Wondering who has been a tourist before you? One leading physicist spent 17 years working here in Merrion Square. Merrion SquareI've finally added Merrion Square to the Dublin by Area guide. There's a full page about the history and architecture, what to do and what to see, as well as a list of hotels in the area. Dublin on the WebAlthough the pages of this site are purely personal reflections of Dublin, I use the web frequently to check my facts. In doing so, I've come across other sites providing useful information and pictures of Dublin. I've put a selection of these in my Other Sites about Dublin page. |
