RTE
Radio Teilifís Éireann, the Irish national brodcaster. In a fitting demonstration of the interconnectedness of all things, their headquarters at Montrose incorporates a house that was once the family home of Marconi's mother.
Rashers
Slices of bacon, and an essential part of a Full Irish.
The Spire
(St) Stephens Green
See The Green
Stop The Lights
An expression of amazement (from a 60s TV show).
Street
A thoroughfare of a certain size or importance. Though no one's quite certain what the ground rules are, you should know that there are other types: as well as Upper and Lower Fitzwilliam Street, for example, there are Fitzwilliam Square, Fitzwilliam Place and Fitzwilliam Place North (which is miles away on the other side of the city). Therefore the denomination is part of the proper name of the street and a tourist asking for directions to O'Connell (as one did of us recently) is likely to end up in Glasnevin Cemetry (and no, we didn't).
Tayto
One of Dublin's great local companies, Tayto make the best crisps in the world, no argument about it. In the 1950s they were the first producers of cheese and onion flavour crisps, the brainchild of their founder Joseph "Spud" Murphy.
Temple Bar
Named after (or "for" if you're from the other side of the pond) Sir William Temple, who used to own the land. Temple Bar in the eighties was a half-mile stretch of run-down warehouses. Someone decided to turn it into Dublin's Left Bank, a cultural quarter complete with marauding Stag and Hen parties, and a new Dublin was born. Some things worked, some things didn't. If you're travelling en famille, make sure to visit the wonderful Ark Children's Theatre.
Town
Dubliners never go to the city ar the city centre, nor do we have a uptown or a downtown. Instead we go into and out of town. It's something you should know.
