How to speak like a true Dub: U-Z

U2 / Bono
If you don't know who they are, ask a tourist. Don't ask a Dub, because he'll spend an hour telling you he knows Bono's mother's second cousin's milkman, or about the time he tried to get off with Ali Hewson at a party.

If they really are the reason for your visit, be sure to take in The Wall at Windmill Lane and The Clarence Hotel, where you may actually meet them. Really.
UCD
University College Dublin. Once The Catholic University and founded by Cardinal Newman at 86-87 St Stephens Green, alma mater to James Joyce and many other famous Dubs, it now occupies a sprawling campus at Belfield in the south suburbs.
VHI
Voluntary Health Insurance. Ireland's first and main health insurer with offices at Lower Abbey Street. The mother of a friend of mine (Lord, rest her soul) onve described someone as being "VHI-positive".
The Wall
Young Wan (One)
As in "Hey, Young Wan!" or "There's a young wan here for you!, this is a classic example of the concept of "default" in action. A young one in Dublin is always female.
